Abortion

Discussing abortion is a prickly issue. Many conservatives will tell you abortion is wrong, end of conversation. Of course we believe abortion is wrong, but there are some issues that should be considered. The First Presidency has issued statements that abortion may be an option (though not automatic) in cases of rape, incest or serious danger to the mother's life or health. These are exceptions frequently overlooked by Republican lawmakers in both Utah and the nation as a whole.

Knowing something is wrong doesn't automatically tell us how to handle the issue legally. Many immoral acts are legal.

We should all be working together to fight the root causes of abortion. Sex education is a necessity. Abstinence only programs have been shown to be failures. People who have decided to wait until marriage before having sex already have decided by this point. These programs all too often don't address the hormonal urges of teens. Making birth control available will decrease the number of abortions. Some will argue this promotes promiscuity. What it really does is face the reality that people will have sex without considering consequences. Forcing people into a situation where the woman is likely to become pregnant is an ineffective and cruel way to discourage fornication. People choose to be chaste because they understand the sacredness of sex, not because of risks for pregnancy or disease.
